Last year was pretty weird, to put it mildly. From the beginning of a global pandemic to depressing political uncertainty, it gave us a lasting headache. However, we say it’s time to look forward. What better way to do so than by experimenting with new fashion trends? Our article aims to explore what spring and summer of 2021 have to offer clothes-wise.
What We Will Leave Behind
Every season has an end, and the same goes for fashion. We’re no strangers to changing how we feel about clothes and designs just months after they win us over. In that regard, spring/summer collection 2021 will be no different from the previous year. Some things are better left in the past, so here are some of our fashion candidates.
Firstly, 2020 was all about neon-green designs, but some of us didn’t buy into it. It was just a bit too extreme for our liking. Therefore, it’s time to say goodbye to looking like a tunnel sign. And believe us when we say we won’t miss it, just like we won’t look back on 2020 with nostalgia.
On the other hand, we’ve got tie-dye. Sure, quarantine was a nightmare for most of us, and applying some color to our lives was crucial to make it out alive in one piece. However, we’re past the point of the initial shock (well, most of us), and these retro hippie patterns don’t make sense anymore. So — bye, bye, tie-dye.
Another thing to skip is a pair of chain-embellished shoes. We get that lots of people find them pretty and all, but they’re not practical. In our eyes, being ready for anything is last years’ most important lesson. Hence, shoes with chains won’t make it into our closet for the spring collection of 2021.
Hello, Second-Skin Tops
Thinking about fashion trends can be a nightmare. From various misleading sources to self-doubt, an average fashionista wouldn’t know where to begin. However, it doesn’t have to be like that at all. The simplest way to understand what everyone will be wearing come spring 2021 is to follow what fashion giants like Miu Miu, Givenchy, or Marine Serre are promoting on their runways.
From what we have seen, their 2021 collections will be full of second-skin tops. Yes, something so simple yet full of potential. The thing is, second-skin tops are so versatile that you can pair them with sweatpants or even wear them underneath knits. Also, you can combine them with your jeans and under your coat. It’ll work dead-on, trust us.
Look Tactical With Utility Vests
A blast from the past occurs every once in a while. The same goes for 2021 fashion, and here’s what we believe will be a big trend this year. Oh, yeah, we’re all about utility vests. Wearing them, you’ll look like some sort of cinematographer on a set of some early-90s indie movie.
Last year was all about knit pullover vests. As things change and we move forward, utility vests are somewhat of an evolution. Either way, seeing how it’s still not spring, our advice would be to wear some bulkier and quilted vests until spring finally comes and you get comfortable with something thinner.
You can wear them over pretty much everything. So try to put them on over a second-skin top or be traditional and wear them over a sweatshirt. Also, don’t hesitate to experiment with flannel shirts underneath your utility vests. It’s a classic look, so there’s no reason not to try it out.
The Return of Loose Trousers
Fashion weeks and runways are full of baggy, loose trousers once again. This lovely street-style was begging to come around for some time now, and it seems like 2021 is the perfect year for such a nonchalant fashion statement. And believe us, we’re so looking forward to rocking a pair of loose jeans come spring.
You can combine them with almost anything in your closet. However, we’d go with some stylish blazer on top of a knit. It’s a perfect combo for spring, seeing how it’s not as warm yet, and you need to suit up a bit. On the other hand, a classic pair of loose blue jeans and a leather jacket is another option to consider.
Flaunt Your Curves With Micro-Mini Skirts
Teleporting us back directly to the groovy 1960s, micro-mini skirts are what’s going to rock the fashion world in the latter part of the year. Just like all those years ago, you can combine microscopic skirts with cool shrunken knits above. Moreover, going for colorful designs will bring back the vibe of the late-60s with ease.
As for what to wear on your feet with micro-mini skirts, we’d go for high boots that cover your knees. It’s a classic look, making it impossible to look out of style. Also, you can pair it with your second-skin basic tops. It’ll prove perfect since you’ll be combining two of the biggest trends of spring/summer 2021.
The Beth Harmon Effect: Checkerboard Prints
You don’t need to be a big movie/series fan to have heard of The Queen’s Gambit. Sure, quarantine was tough, and streaming services were full of all sorts of content, but none of them made such a big impact like the fictional 1960s chess drama from Netflix. So what does chess have to do with 2021 fashion trends?
Well, we call it the Beth Harmon effect. As seen in the series, she wears checkerboard prints all the time, and they look fabulous. They’re more interesting than stripes and polka dots, making them a perfect solution for spring 2021. For example, Dolce & Gabbana have a certain three-piece we’re dying to get our hands-on.
Building a trend like checkerboard prints is a process. However, we’re more than looking forward to seeing them stick around for the spring of this year. Sure enough, they can be a bit off-putting at first, but after last year — we’re dying for something new and exciting. No doubt it will go away like everything else, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts.
